I'd like to shine a light on how the movie includes almost everything from the book. We can talk about Artemis' personality all day, but I have seen hundreds of tweets saying basically "Disney only kept the names, they changed everything, there's nothing from the books in here."
And that's just not true. And it's gotten real old real fast. These trailers are put together in a very misleading way, and choose to feature largely scenes that have been added instead of what's from the books. But we have seen glimpses of almost everything that happens in book.
So, here's the book's key plot points one by one. Spoilers for the book (and movie, by extension) follow:

Ho Chi Minh. Photographing the Fairy Bible they got from the old sprite. Translating it. Stakeout at the oak tree. That's everything from the first two chapters of the book.
Holly fights the troll in Italy. Holly gets shot with a tranq dart and ends up in a cell in Fowl manor.
Holly finds an acorn in her cell. Artemis makes the anti-fairy sunglasses from her helmet. Also, of course, the fairy army goes to the manor, and looks awesome. They send a squad of fairies to the door.
They're fought off, just like in the book. Root comes in to negotiate. Mulch is called in. The same scene happens in the goblin cell, with the fingers up the nose. Mulch surveys the manor he's supposed to break into. He cracks the Fowl safe.
Juliet watching the monitors. Cudgeon tries to take over from Root. Holly punches Artemis. The troll is brought up to the manor.

The only real difference is that Artemis & Mulch are directly involved in the troll fight. There's still a troll in the manor, just like the book.
We know the troll is beaten. Artemis gets his gold. They hold champagne glasses, presumably to escape the time-stop. Speaking of which, forgot to mention the time-stop itself, which happens just like the book. And then it's escaped. They even have the LEP enter & get nauseous.
The only scenes not in the movie (that we know of) that are in the book are:

The whole tangent with the whaling ship. Not crucial to the book's plot. It was even an afterthought to Artemis.

We haven't seen Mulch tunneling yet but it's definitely in the movie. Many quotes on it.
That's basically it. We haven't seen the Angeline scene in trailers or photos, but she's described in the making-of book. That thread is in there. What's also in the movie is Dr. Po's counseling from book 2. Great. Awesome. More book scenes. Nothing wrong with that.
What scenes have been added? Some stuff with the father? Not really even that. We already knew in the book that that daddy stuff happened before the book begins. It's not been pulled from the sky. He liked his father, his father went away and disappeared. Not new.
His father's rescue seems to be happen. That's again a book 2 thing, but it's book material. The father does get rescued. Are we supposed to be mad Disney is adapting *too much* of the books? I think not.

Mulch sticks around longer than he used to. That's fine. More Mulch.
Also, yes, Artemis and Holly become a little bit closer, AFTER she's kidnapped and is out of her cell. That already sort of happened in the book. She healed Butler. She advocated the humans not be killed. She healed Mother. Holly falling in with the humans is not new material.
An extra magical artifact has been introduced, in lieu of Mulch finding a copy of the bible in the safe. Not a big change. An extra macguffin.

There's a scene of Mulch in jail telling the story of Artemis. That's fine. The book was already framed as being told by a fairy.
...They've just changed which fairy tells the story from Argon to Mulch. Not a great loss, in fact I'd say it's a welcome addition. Mulch was always a funnier unreliable narrator than Argon.
They've added Opal Koboi. A person from the books who wants to kill Artemis and take over the world, and this is now in the movie. Again, this is book material. They haven't made up a new villain. She's in book 1 now. So what? Adapting 2 stories instead of 1 is a win in my book.
In conclusion, very nearly everything from the book (and some stuff from the 2nd book) is in the movie. Not a great big deal has been added, and most of what's new was already implied or seeded in the books.

Artemis is made more active. That's the biggest change. We'll live.
Oh and Holly's backstory is changed from "first female fairy in this one specific police department" (implausible for such an advanced society) to "struggling to get out from under her father's name, her father being a traitor."

This is so trivial it's ridiculous. We'll be fine.
