It's really important to remember two things:

1) Cummings confirmed the facts reported by the press
2) Conservative MPs, who all voted for Brexit, are calling for him to resign

All the #scummedia #Mediawitchhunt hashtags are trying to distract from these facts
There are increasingly voices trying to claim the case against Cummings is secretly a case against Brexit.

Below are MPs or senior Conservatives who have publicly called for Cummings to resign and who voted for Brexit. A quick search found 26, the Times reports 39
There are two elements reported by the press which Cummings denies:

- That Durham police spoke to him
- That he returned to Durham on April 19

One is a quote from police. The other includes the denial. This is reporting. Neither are why Tory MPs call for his head.
Certain newspapers have done a huge amount to undermine trust in the media over the years. But more often than not attacks on journalism are carried out in bad faith, misunderstand the nature of reporting or don't distinguish news from opinion. Often all of the above.
I don't know how to fix this problem. I'd be rich if I did. In many ways the established media is broken, clinging to outdated means of distribution and with a business model that rewards sensationalism in much the same way as social media platforms
Shares and likes are the engine behind what people see online now, and the best fuel for that engine is emotion. There are people on here who scream about "the media" who are understand this implicitly and press all those emotional buttons to manipulate their followers
They use the exact tactics they accuse "the media" of using but without any of the accountability. So I guess we all need to recognise when our buttons are being pushed and when we are being distracted from the facts.
