In this thread I will collect my ideas and the thoughts of others that are related to the idea that "structured degrees should be replaced by guided learning journeys."
Think of knowledge as something like a continent. What’s the best way to become familiar with a region that sparked your interest?

- a travel documentary? (Recorded lectures.)
- a bus tour? (Traditional university course.)
- backpacking? (Pure autodidactism)
- something else?
A video lecture course is like a travel documentary. Maybe entertaining but probably won’t provide you with any deep understanding or long-lasting memories.
A traditional university course is like a bus tour. Everyone travels to the same landmarks and only hears the same explanations irrespective of their personal interests and background. Moreover, most people are locked out from participating as they don't have the money/time.
A completely independent “backpacking tour” through the continent of knowledge can be an intimidating endeavor and those who try it often get stuck or lost.
Isn’t there any other alternative? There is. Let's call it "guided expeditions".

The program of a guided expedition is as flexible as in an independent “backpacking tour” but you still have an experienced guide at your side that makes sure you won’t get stuck or lost.
Everyone moves at their own pace. You’ll still have to wade through the mud yourself. After all, understanding requires effort. But the guide will support you and move major obstacles out of your way.
Here's an old slide of mine that summarizes some of the main ideas.
