This piece has so resonated w/ me cause I& #39;ve been at CUNY like half my life as undergrad, honors ambassador, REU, writing center & accessibility center & ACT? tutor, graduate student, adjunct in 4? departments, PLTL coordinator, REU mentor, digital fellow, research assistant... https://twitter.com/nytopinion/status/1265285576263114752">https://twitter.com/nytopinio...
Was reminded of two of those jobs today, maybe had others?...was also president of robotics club... Like the article mentions, I& #39;m the sort of white kid who goes to CUNY - first gen or Orthodox (I& #39;m both) local kid who wants a degree but doesn& #39;t care much about college experience
And yet like I did all the things (and worked in 3 labs in 3 different disciplines...) & #39;cause that is the strength of a semi-functional CUNY. There are all these opportunities & like not many hoops to jump for any of & #39;em when I was there...
But like I& #39;ve seen it with my students, that budget cuts have led to it being harder to get into their majors & fewer classes, & like that leaves less flex for exploring & student support is a mess & like I only graduated cause advisors helped me navigate a sticky situation
And also adjuncts get paid approx $3000/class which like isn& #39;t sustainable - my department basically resorts to exploting unfunded folks on visas since anyone authorized to work can make more on like a week or 2 of contract work...
And like it means sections are forever over tallied on a 35 cap & labs never have enough seats and if you don& #39;t get into that once a year lab graduation goes up in flames...and the problems are only getting worse with the planned cuts #CutCovidNotCUNY
No official announcements yet about fall, but like if they fired all the adjuncts they don& #39;t have enough rooms large enough to fit the double/quadruple sections even sans social distancing & like the buildings are kind of falling apart...& yeah soap availablity is flaky
