tennessee v. garner (look it up) is the case that essentially legalized police brutality. until the supreme court overturns this ruling, police can kill whoever they want under the guise that they “believed their life was in danger.”
countless times they have shown that belief isn’t rooted in fact. these officers need to be thrown in prison for exerting lethal force when clearly unnecessary.
graham vs. connor is another sc case that upholds police violence without consequence
ultimately it should be the govt’s obligation to take away such an overwhelming power from law enforcement, but this country and its structures were built to disadvantage/harm black people/POC. a clear, intentional violation of human rights
concluding this thread by saying police departments as a whole need to be held accountable. there is NO reason law enforcement should rely on militarization tactics, and it’s not okay for officers to hold negative cultural beliefs towards those they are policing.
