1/n The Ktka Govt recently issued an order exempting factories from the factories act, allowing for 10 hour work days. In a survey we conducted with Garments Mahila Karmikara Munnade, 65% of workers said they will not & could not work for longer hours.
2/n The telephonic survey which covered 4 districts of South Karnataka was conducted to assess the impact of the lockdown on the material and emotional lives of garment workers; and the extent of vulnerability they feel currently. 63 % workers did'nt receive salary for April.
4/4 Based on the survey among garment workers, report also has reccos- action to ensure wages are paid, helpline for wage related complaints, job cuts, nutritional support, health camps & other measures. Women are in deep distress, govt needs to act fast @CMofKarnataka
3/n Another key finding - With employers not paying salaries & the state not providing any income or food support, workers turned informal sources to borrow money. 45 % of garment workers had to borrow money to tide over the lockdown, mostly from neighbours, friend,relatives
