i’ve always been pretty resistant to “wholesomeness” as a genre/descriptor for the games we make. i feel like it trivialises the thought that goes into our aesthetics, stories and themes. i appreciate the critical discussion that’s been happening around this topic today.
i’m not criticising the wholesome direct, i think it’s great that indie studios creating non-violent games have a space to show their work. i’m talking about worm club and how i want our games to be perceived.
My fear is that when we lump games together as “wholesome” we risk ignoring the nuanced themes that developers are working hard to put in their games. If my games are wholesome, can my characters be flawed? Can they be rude, abrasive? Are wholesome games allowed to be political?
