should i.....expose this well-known roller skater for racism NOW or after getting a full night's rest?
Planet Roller Skates/Indy Jamma Jones are erasing and silencing Black people's experience of racism while skating by deleting posts documenting their experiences. Saying that it's "too political" and there are children in the group.
A Black group member posted this, detailing her experience & connecting it to the murder of George Floyd. Many white/nonblack members bitched in the comments, asking if it was relevant to skating (EVEN THO IT'S ABOUT HER EXPERIENCE WHILE SKATING). Her post was deleted by PRS mods
Many group members noticed that the post was deleted and made their own posts about it. Their posts were also deleted by the mods and they were removed from the group.
Eventually Indy Jamma Jones and the Planet Roller Skate team had to respond. This is what she said
Folks were RIGHTFULLY heated by her lackluster, wonderbread ass response.
So...Indy Jamma Jones responded again....this time stating that because children are in the group there cannot be any poltiical posts. Literally. Read it.
I mean this is foul for so many fucking reasons. Black skaters' experiences don't matter? Also what about Black children...do they exist your world or nah Indy??? Cause racism is a "violent truth" to them that they can't be shielded from....
Let's also not forget that roller skating culture would be nothing without Black Americans. NOTHING.
So where does that land us now?
1) A spin-off group centering Black/POC experiences has been created (DM me for the link if you're interested)
2) Planet Roller Skate has not responded to the HUNDREDS of comments underneath Indy's latest post
My opinion? Don't shop from them. And if you've ordered anything recently, request a refund (like I have). This is the shit that white women do. Ignore and erase Black experiences and center their own comfort. Shop elsewhere. Fin.
Update: Shayna Pigeon Meikle Anderson of Planet Roller Skate posted a response laden with white guilt & stated they will be “hiring a new experienced admin” that will be POC......lmao like that does anything except put the work that THEY should be doing on Black folks/POC 🙄
Here’s a video about all of the above created by a Black woman who got removed from the Planet Roller Skate group after speaking up
