/13 won't be able to sleep tonight. The murder of George Floyd has been on my mind all day. After I graduated from law school, I became a Public Defender in Hennepin County because I wanted to help people. Yet, it is instances like this that make me feel helpless.
/13 I worked with clients just like George Floyd. I can tell you that in Hennepin County, Mr. Floyd likely would have been released with conditions, especially during this time of COVID-19.
/13 He would have been home tonight with his loved ones, like the four officers that participated in this heinous act, but instead he’s gone and his family mourns. As a community, we all mourn.
/13 Swift action is needed to show that George Floyd’s life does matter. This morning we saw the first step. The officers involved were fired by Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo. This wasn't just a good decision, it was the only one.
/13 As a labor attorney, I know that these officers will appeal and could very well be reinstated given the strength of their union contract negotiated by Minneapolis Police Federation President Lt Bob Kroll. This is no time to celebrate justice or claim victory.
/13 I am hoping that like me, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman doesn't sleep tonight. That he is awake and pursuing justice for George Floyd and his loved ones. I hope that the video that was captured of Mr. Floyd’s murder plays on repeat in his head as it does mine.
/13 After these officers are charged, there must be a fair process for the selection of the jury.
/13 The prosecution must pursue this case with the same vigor that it pursued against officer Mohamed Noor—a Black Muslim who CA Freeman pummeled for nearly two years, landing a murder conviction and a 12+ year prison sentence for the killing of Justine Ruszczyk, a white woman.
/13 In addition, the settlement with the family of George Floyd must not be a penny less than the 20 million dollar settlement that the family of Mrs. Ruszczyk received in 2019.
/13 Like everyone else, I am still processing my thoughts about how our policies and laws must change to prevent these incidents from happening. I do know that we need to rethink our current state of policing.
/13 As a country we have taken extreme actions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and our government is sparing no resource to eradicate it. We need to take the same extreme measures to root out the insidious virus of white supremacy. It has plagued us for over 400 years.
/13 Continue to grieve the way that you feel necessary, whether at home or in the streets. Listen to folks like @NAACPmpls President @LeslieERedmond, @DarrisElizer, @D4Commish Angela Conley and many more local Black leaders who are continuing to show courageous leadership.
/13 I ask that you continue to press on because we need everyone in this fight. Again, this is just the beginning.
