It's #ACSM20 week! [a thread]
Picture this...
I just arrived into sunny San Fran and got to hug my bearded friend @KTB_PhD. Snuck out for a "quiet" dinner with a few of the crew before the craziness begins. So much great science awaits. So many amazing people to see and meet.
Day 1 & @KLCampbellPhD & I present our bone mets & exercise tutorial. It feels great to share this work with the #exerciseoncology community. An amazing team has created this.
And on Friday I present my MSc thesis work on exercise counselling in prostate cancer (woohoo!).
But rather than focus on the science, it is the people who really bring us back each year. The "magic" that happens after 5pm (or by Friday, anytime).
OOOHHH, look at that huge crowd, who are they talking to? It's @CiaranFairman! Something about viral videos? (yeah buddy! đź‘Ś)
So much is going on right now. 1000 conversations at once. @Jen_Edgecombe just found this years physical challenge ( #ExOnc will crush it!) & we manage to come up with the perfect plan to win (a productive 2am). I envy her energy!
Wait, no... whats that noise? Ugh, alarm. 6am. Gym. It's packed. I sweat it out. Always helps. 4hrs sleep does not feel good. Coffee. 8am keynote. Just made it. This is day 2. Goal - to science hard. Sneak away for an #ExOncTC meeting. Poolside. Bar. This is science, right?
But the science really is worth travelling for. I stand at the back of the room typing notes into my phone.
Capturing slides in a single snap.
Tweeting key messages.
Each day I need a few moments to myself just to process all the information & put it into context.
Back to the bar...We are all hurting a bit today. Except @exoncolgermany, he is smarter than all of us and turns in early. I am excited I can actually pronouce his name this year - in Denver I had to call him JW as I just didn't get it (Thanks @amyakirkham for creating that one!)
We try to find food. Our group has grown. Dinner for 20-40ppl is tough! End up at the bar (shock). Score a spot near @CanRehab - the legend herself - and am entertained all night. Convinced @QuistMorten this WAS his ironman training. Plus, he did his 1st run today. He's got this.
The night rolls on. No-one really knows what happens next. Edna E is irish dancing ( @kelceybland), the Danes found a blues bar, @DarpanPatelPhD loses a skulling comp (never challenge an Aussie) and somehow a group of us find ourselves walking home, talking science & philosophy
New science friends.
Wait, no... whats that noise? Ugh, alarm. 6am. Gym. It's packed. I sweat it out. I tell myself it helps. 4hrs sleep does not feel good. Coffee. 8am keynote. Just made it. Day 3 begins. Lots of meetings today. Why did we think this was a good idea?
Day 3 always hurts. But not as much as day 4. Sleep deprivation. Over stimulated brain. Connection overload. So much science. So many laughs. Too many beers.
Friday night. We have worked so hard, we should celebrate (or so we tell ourselves). Today's goal: science hard.
Somehow the night takes us to an after-party of an event we may or may not have been at. Run into @fitaftercancer.
I still remember 2 years ago how I was so scared to introduce myself before a symposium session.
"SHOTS", some idiot shouts across the room...
Wait, no... whats that noise? Ugh, alarm. 6am. No... not today. Pack bags. Check out. Attend the science. Hugs galore. Head to airport. Emotions. Sleep deprivation. My brain won't stop buzzing. So much stimulation. My spirit feels full. I am ready to go home though. Need quiet.
This is ACSM. I miss it already. But am glad to be healthy & safe right now.

While it might look like a lot of drinking and partying, it is also full of developing amazing connections, exploring new ideas, brainstorming with leaders in your field, learning & thinking. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
