Regarding Amy Cooper and the "Karen" phenomenon: as with any situation where white people take a piece of AAVE and use it as their own, they end up changing the meaning because they never understand the concept to begin with.
"The Karen" is now the stuff of YouTube skits, BuzzFeed articles, and "clever" tweets. White people feel free to use these terms despite the fact they were coined specifically by marginalized people to identify methods of opression and racial violence.
Are the jokes funny? Sure, some of them. But some of them show just how desperately white people need to stay in their own lane. Has everyone forgotten the white man who referred to Anne Frank as a colonizer and a Becky? Because that heinous tweet is burned into my brain.
But now the term Karen has become a parody of itself, and it downplays the very real danger presented by Any Cooper. Perhaps you've heard of Emmet Till? Emmet Till was 14 when he was kidnapped at gun point, beaten, mutilated, and shot in the head.
What was the "crime" Till committed? Supposedly he touched a white woman's waist and spoke obcenities into her delicate white ear. Except Carolyn Bryant, the white woman in question, confessed she was lying all those years ago, and at worst Till winked at her.
Carolyn Bryant is a murderer, as sure as her husband Roy and J.W. Milam,l. She caused the horrific and painful death of a 14 year old boy with her lies and tears. No one was ever convicted in his case, even when the murderers confessed later, because of double jeopardy.
The only punishment that his murderers suffered was economic. The case was so incredibly horrifying that even the whites in their own town decried their actions. Their businesses went bankrupt, their jobs dried up, and they were made pariahs everywhere they lived.
Racism should have consequences. Racist should receive punishment for the harm they cause. Amy Cooper's firing was an appropriate response to her behavior. We're lucky that she's receiving consequences that may prevent another Emmett Till from happening.
Amy Cooper is not a Karen, and I am sick and tired of hearing her referred to as one. She was shown on camera to be violent and dangerous, and attempted to commit murder by cop with her tears. Amy Cooper isn't a Karen, she's a Carolyn Bryant, and she deserves everything she gets.
