..
So how did Indian history become myth?
..
Tamil Sangam literature (200 BCE-200 CE) refer to Ram frequently, comparing various situations to his life. Various inscriptions by Tamil rulers refer to Ram n Nala setu with pride. Al-Beruni also says Ram built dyke (setu) to Lanka. Only a mortal could have done that.
..
Did Ram exist? Yes, I am quite sure he did. His life was a fact; divinity is a matter of faith. To doubt existence of Ram is to doubt all literature. There is no archaeological or epigraphic evidence for Jesus or Muhammad, who are known only from Bible n Quran, respectively.
..
Does it mean they didn't exist? If Ram performs miracles, such as liberating Ahalya, Biblical story of Jesus walking on water or Quranic tale of Muhammad flying to heaven on a horse are equally miraculous. Such stories reinforce divinity, not fact.
..
Ram’s memory lives on b/c of his extraord life n persona, n his reign, which was obviously a period of great peace n prosperity, making ‘Rama Rajya’ a reference point.
..
People only remember the very good or the very bad. And they only deify the best. It is appropriate that a temple to commemorate the life of this extraordinary king of ancient India will come up soon.
