put my delu hat on so let’s break down this iconic yoonmin moment <3

🐱: 저 오늘 생일인데 한마디씩 해주시면 안 돼요?
🐱: 딱 한마디만 해요
🐿: 딱 한마디만요?
🐿: (...)
🐱: 네, 감사합니다. 방금 했어요.
🐥: 알잖아요
🐱: 알잖아요
🐯: 고마워
so first of all i self taught korean lmao so take it with a grain of salt. i made this solely to be delulu with my yoonmin oomfs 🤝
im just gonna jump straight to the 알잖아 (you know) part

so ~잖아 (janh-a) is a conjugate used to convey that the person you’re spoken to already has the information you’re saying. there’s no direct translation for this
maam how do i explain this lmao its like to assert? Let’s say jinkook are bickering about a correct answer, jin said A but kook said B then the run producer said jin is correct so jin would say “맞잖아” - (SEE? i TOLD you I WAS RIGHT) – this would be the closest expression in eng
anyway ~잖아 can be used in many situations but basically the person spoken to need to have existing information and you’re like re-asserting the info
🐥: 알잖아요
🐱: 알잖아요

알(다) - to know
알잖아 - you already know
요 - a conjugate to show respect

so jimin is referring to whatever it is he’s trying to say, yoongi already knows and understands
yoonminies were heartbroken yesterday due to the revelation we’ve been living in a lie that yoongi’s reply is not what we think it is 😔

but imo it can go many ways and only yoongi knows the truth 😔
1) yoongi did reply “i know”

the direct translation of 알잖아요 would be “already know” but bear in mind korean sometimes dont specify who is the speaker is referring to so this could mean “(i) already know”

If specified it can go like this:
나는/저는/난/전 알잖아요
2) this is why yoonminies were crying yesterday: yoongi just repeated jimin’s word

however, there’s a reason i put the whole video of that little scene up there to let you see how yoongi responded to hobi and tae and compare it to jimin
hobi didnt even manage to say a word before yoongi cut him off hhhhh bcs he wanted it fast fast as they were ending the radio and hobi was thinking what to say. tae said thank you and yoongi didnt say anything but they were laughing maybe bcs tae didnt add ~요
with jimin, he may just repeated jimin’s word and move along. But somehow i dont think it’s to the point of mistranslation bcs it could mean “i know” (and also the vlive translator whom literal job to translate them said so too)
of course it isnt a groundbreaking moment or anything they were moving so fast lol but it doesnt make it less imo. Only yoongi knows what his response meant but the you know i know isnt a mistranslation
so in conclusion

🐥: (you) already know
🐱: (i) already know

Or

🐥: (you) already know
🐱: (you) already know (repeating jimin’s word as in the sense to say ‘okay, moving on’)

however, you know i know isnt exactly a mistranslation only yoongi knows what he meant to say here
I repeated myself a lot but anyway this is my interpretation so take it how you want it 😗✌🏼 putting off my delu hat, just want to say im currently writing this thread and will finish it today please give it a read hsjsjs 🥺🥺 https://twitter.com/yoonmeanie/status/1265021849949179905?s=21 https://twitter.com/yoonmeanie/status/1265021849949179905
