As many BIPOC ppl in the West know, there are many versions of Karen, I’ll share here the ones I’ve experienced..
1. In-your-face-karen: the direct racism, telling u to go home, hitting you on the head for wearing a headscarf, threatening to call the police on you type
2. Subtle-karen: the only difference between her and in-your-face-karen is that she knows how to do racism on the downlow, in an indirect way. The type who says they’re not racist but vote for Trump in the #US and right wing parties in #Europe
3. I’m-Not-A-Karen-Karen: The karen who will spend most of her time trying to prove she’s not a karen, but minute there’s disagreement suddenly all her thoughts on some race being more equal than others becomes more than apparent - then usually ends with “I have BIPOC friends"
4. Progressive-Karen: this type tho.. the one’s that support BLM, speaks out / tweets against racism and discrimination, may even do human rights/humanitarian work, then implements subtle and/or direct discrimination against BIPOC at work
Just last month my subletter in Copenhagen who was a white woman that was racist and verbally abusive (sent me racist and abusive emails multiple times a day for over 2 months), threatened to call the police and make false accusations of feeling threatened.
I felt threatened and anxious because I knew that being a woman of color meant that while I wasn’t afraid of being killed (bcz this was #Denmark not the #US), that the police were more likely to believe her despite evidence to the contrary, and despite my being a citizen
I mention citizenship bcz in Denmark you’re most protected as a citizen, unless of course you’re POC, then not so much. To make matters worse, because yes, it got worse than that, she contacted my lease company and made false accusations
While being stuck outside the country, during a pandemic, the lease company immediately believed the white woman of course, and threatened to kick me out of my apartment.
They told me they had nothing to do with the fact she was racist or abusive, while sharing private information about my lease with the subletter, and giving her advice about where else she can complain about me - ie make further false accusations.
While dealing with all this, I had no remedy for the vitriol abuse I was being subjected to by this subletter, Denmark doesn’t have proper mechanisms for addressing discrimination and racism...
I remember growing up in Denmark hearing stories about children removed from their POC parents because of false accusations/complaints. I remember hearing how we shouldn’t even joke about being disciplined by our parents in front of white people because we may get taken away
