The Truth About Lupus: A Thread.
Source of information: http://lupus.org
First of all we need to jump into the basics of SLE, commonly known as Lupus for short.
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects your immune system and many other regions of your body.
A healthy immune system produces a needed thing called antibodies which are found in white blood cells, antibodies are used for one purpose: to fight off foreign invaders in our body (common cold, flu, viruses etc). Somebody with Lupus will have a shortage of these antibodies.
Due to having a shortage of these antibodies, a Lupus patient/survivor will have a very hard time fighting off illnesses, and have a much slower recovery speed. This includes recovering from cuts, bruises, swelling and many other things for what takes us days... takes them weeks.
Lupus also affects your body in vast ways varying from: hair loss, headaches, difficulty swallowing, enlarged liver, pancreatitis, kidney problems, anemia, pregnancy complications, tiredness, Sjogren’s, mouth sores, gland swelling, chest pain, troubles breathing, joint pain etc
How Lupus affects the lungs and pulmonary system: a small thread.

Inflammation caused by Lupus may affect the lungs in many ways, and it can involve the membrane lining of the lungs, the lungs themselves, the blood vessels within the lungs, and the diaphragm.
Lung conditions that arise more frequently due to Lupus are...
Pleuritis: causes severe, sharp stabbing pains in areas of your chest, also can experience a shortness of breath (SOB).It’s found in 40-60% of people with Lupus.
Pneumonitis: causes fevers, chest pain, SOB & a cough.
Chronic diffuse interstitial lung disease: causes a chronic dry cough, chest pain, and a shortness of breath during physical activity.
Pulmonary emboli: causes blood clots, chest pain, shortness of breath, and a decrease in oxygen flow in the lungs.
How Lupus affects an artists ability to sing:
Lupus causes inflammation that affects the synovial lining, which in return, places pressure on the vocal cords. The swelling is what is thought to cause the voice issues with Lupus.
The researchers found that people w/Lupus had “notably lower vocal intensity & harmonics to noise ratio, as well as increased jitter & shimmer” in their voices. Most people reported at least 1 vocal deficit (29/36 participants) most common symptoms: vocal fatigue and dysphonia.
Additionally, researchers looked into tissue damage in the organ systems related to dysphonia. They found that increased tissue damage was correlated with increased symptoms. This implies that the voice loss was due to tissue damage possibly caused by SLE.

This is somebody’s experience living with Lupus from a very young age.
Another Lupus patient was Michael Jackson and he had a scarred and bruised lung due to Lupus and had to lip sync a lot of his performances later on in his life before death.
Moral of the story is: educate yourself on Lupus, and the effects on the body before making a judgement on an artist. People are out here saying that Selenators are using Lupus as an excuse to defend Selena with her vocals, but little did you know... it actually is an excuse.
Also another moral of the story: before judging something that you have little to 0 knowledge about, before calling people names such as “Selupus” “Whisperlena” etc: understand what it means to call someone those horrific names and knowing their health condition. Ignorance is 🗑
