Thread explaining why there is many Foreign countries involved in Libya and what the backers of the GNA and LNA want and why the Oil rich North African Country is in everyone eye sights. 🇱🇾
1. Qatar🇶🇦: Qatar has been involved in Libya since 2011 and even participated in Military operations against Muammar Gaddafi and his forces. Qatar has been throwing a lot of money in Libya. This is mostly for influence and for it to have a Libyan government that is pro Qatar
Qatar have used large number of tools at it's disposal to influence libyan politics via Religion, economic , Social. Influencing at a early stage set a government that became pro Muslim brotherhood that took advantage of the situation and the chaos that Libya descended in 2012.
Qatar supports the GNA and actively is involved in the current proxy war. Often numerous cargo flights land in Misrata airport, Qatar is even accused of paying billions to Other GNA backers so they can fund operations that this country has been involved in.
2. UAE 🇦🇪: the UAE has been involved not only in Libya, but everywhere in the Middle east. The UAE has been doing the exact same thing as Qatar however it's to COUNTER the influence of the Muslim brotherhood. Mohammad Bin Zayed has been active in Yemen, Libya
Accused of multiple Coup backings across the Arab world. The UAE does not want to see political Islam in the governments of the Arab world. It's why they dislike the Muslim brotherhood, it's why they are very invested in many conflicts. UAE absolutely hates Qatar more than Saudi.
The UAE has also been instrumental in the LNA advances in western libya, although the recent setbacks, I don't see how MBZ can drop it's support for Haftar and the LNA. This support includes drones , Armored vehicles and other arms that the LNA has at it's disposal.
3. Egypt 🇪🇬. Ever since the Rise of Abdelfattah Al Sisi and his role in ousting the Muslim brotherhood and Mohamed Morsi. The Egyptian Government has been keeping close eye at it's neighbors in the West. Libya was in chaos, Militias and crime at all time high.
With a new Sisi Government, it was clear security was at it's top issue. With the growing insurgency in Sinai and the Muslim brotherhood setting shop in Libya. The Egyptian Government and it's army HAD to step in with support to make sure the violence didn't hit Egypt in the West
Libya is considered to Egypt an extension of it's national security. Whatever happens in Libya was worth an eye to Cairo. Sisi pledged to Egypt gat security would be the biggest promise to the Egyptians who Muslim brotherhood linked supporters rioted in the streets of Egypt
Egypt supports the LNA and is very worried about the current situation like so many countries in the region, the worry and anxiety about what happens in Libya is very important for National security
4. Turkey🇹🇷 perhaps the most instrumental supporter of the GNA. turkey has been active in the war in Libya. In late 2019 it signed a maritime border deal allowing Turkey Drill for Gas/Oil in Libyan war . This deal was highly criticized by the regional countries such as Egypt
Greece, Cyprus. Turkey presented itself as the country that can save Libyans from this war and involved itself but arming the GNA and orchestrating a very damaging campaign of drones that uplifted the morale of broken fighters loyal to the GNA, destroyed critical supply lines.
And eventually secured a critical base in the West of Libya, Al Watiya Air base. Perhaps the biggest worry and issue is that Turkey has exported a significant amount of Syrian mercenaries from Idlib who are now in Libya. This has caused a major concern to countries like Egypt
And others in the region with questions about there presence in the North Country. With some even having ISIS flags with them present in the frontlines. With even some of these flights still arriving to Misrata and Tripoli today.
Turkey has upped its influence the past 4 months and will most like take Al Watiya for it's own which is going to be a nightmare to all North African countries. Turkey has aided the GNA by sending frigates to the Tripoli coast covering there forces and equipment.
5. Russia 🇷🇺. The Russian federation has been active in Libya but have been denying that there precense was there. Russian mercenaries operating under Wagner have been found in the frontlines in the west of Libya in significant amount. The estimation is between 1200-3000 mercs
Russia deployed several jets to Libya using Al Jufra as the location to place them in. Russia wants to see a long term plan that will involve one of Libya coastal cities become a Naval Base. It has been there goal to have a base in the Med sea for awhile.
The Mig-29 and Su-24 have been spotted, recently arrived from Russia via Syria.
The US has made it clear and is aware of the current development from Libya regarding the Russian support
6. France 🇫🇷. France is an interesting player because of its security concerns. France wants to prioritize it's security. With Gaddafi France relied on the Libyan army to keep the Terrorists in the Sahel out of the picture and far from European security. Also France
Aims to take many Libyan oil contracts at the end of the war and also major construction and Infrastructure projects that will come from rebuilding the country which is a large sum of money.
7. Italy🇮🇹 Italy is the same situation as France however Italy is more alligned with THE GNA and believes they have better chance at winning. Italian companies are very active in Libya and they feel the GNA can save there oil drilling contracts.
Italy also has been affected with the Migrant and refugee crisis and wants the Libyan Government to stabilize the country so it could end this for Italy sake. Italy used to pay billions to Gaddafi to do this.
8. Algeria 🇩🇿 and Tunisia 🇹🇳: both have the same views with Libya. It's a national security issue espicialy the fact now that Turkey has arrived with 100s of Syrians. However Tunisia is more supportive of the GNA And more vocal than Algeria is. Algeria still likes to pretend
That's it's a neutral Country in the issue even though the signals that are being sent suggests it's pro GNA. Algeria also enjoys deals with the current Government of Tripoli with Shared oil fields. Al wafa oil field is a field that's bordered with Algeria and they both share it
This field was a issue of disagreement when Gaddafi was still ruling the country
LNA accuses Tunisia of housing Turkish drones to bomb targets in Libya, among many other things
Algeria views Libya as an extension to it's security, just like Egypt does and when something happens in Libya. It's areas of interest.
