The return of athletics in Gilbert Public Schools will take place in four phases or “levels” and is expected to begin on June 1. District Athletic Director Stephen McDowell presented a description of all four levels during Tuesday night’s governing board meeting. (1/)
Level 1 focuses on individual conditioning and will last at least two weeks. Here’s a quick summary:
- no physical contact
- 30 or less participants and must remain 6-feet apart
- all weight equipment sanitized before and after workouts
- no sharing of water
(2/)
Level 2 allows for the introduction of small group training and the use of footballs, volleyballs, etc.
- groups of 50 or less
- no physical contact
- no sharing of water or other personal equipment
- max of 2 hours per day per athlete
- social distancing still encouraged
(3/)
Level 3 allows for controlled scrimmages and practices
- limited physical contact
- no limitations on number of participants
- no travel that requires overnight stays
- no sharing of water
- social distancing encouraged when possible
(4/)
Level 4 welcomes full return of play
- no restrictions on training
- games and tournaments will be played
- social distancing recommended for spectators
- no sharing of water

Athletes who join late must complete at least 8 days in level 1 or 2 before full participation. (5/)
There is no specific timeline for progressing from levels 2-4. McDowell said it depends on how the pandemic unfolds in the state. GPS coaches are expected to have a meeting Thursday to finalize the guidelines.

I am hearing similar plans are being made in other districts. (6/)
The AIA is expected to release guidelines for return of play this week. Though McDowell said he expects them to be similar to the ones proposed to the board Tuesday night.

Barring a setback, prep sports in Arizona will return Monday in a limited fashion. (7/7)
