Something I want to understand:

The George Floyd death is horrible and obviously demands a response.

And.... as I understand it, four officers have been fired and the police have *invited* the FBI to begin an investigation of them.

So, the protests are about.... what?
It does not seem like there is a lot more the police department can do, unless I'm missing something? And it seems likely the judicial processes involved are going to deliver a result favorable to Floyd's advocates (as seems appropriate!).

So... what's the "ask" here?
And if it's just making a statement, again.... what is the statement?

Living in HK has made me a lot more sympathetic to "violent" protestors. I see police responses to protest in a much less favorable light than I used to.
But I dunno I think that the difference between a protest and a riot isn't just about violence, it's about purpose. A protest has some aim. The HK protests have been very clear since the beginning about a discrete list of attainable demands.
Even if there is violence, it is violence in service to an extremely clear agenda which, if delivered, can be rationally expected to result in an end to violence.
What is it that police can deliver to these protestors/rioters (not making a judgment here on which term is more correct) which will induce an end to the action? I think if you're protesting and you have no idea what you could be given to satisfy your demands....
lol, you mean the one where they demand free college and trillions of dollars in reparations?

I'm sure Minneapolis PD can deliver on that. https://twitter.com/geofftock/status/1265479300326686720
I'm sure they do want this!

And.... what's the actual demand here? "Change your culture!" okay, so, like, how? What's the actual demand? What policy is to be changed? https://twitter.com/scaredycat102/status/1265479775914651649
Minneapolis has already begun rolling out widespread usage of officer body cams, they do lots of bias training.... it's not like they're some lump on a log backwards PD totally ignorant of recent policing changes!
HK's protests are centered around downtown marches around the offices of the government, which has the de jure authority to deliver on all 5 demands, yes. https://twitter.com/geofftock/status/1265480183265411073
See, I kinda think this is actually what some protestors want! And I understand that! The argument for capital punishment has always been about "the wrath of the community." But I think this is a terrible argument (hence why I'm anti capital punishment). https://twitter.com/SoWisco89/status/1265479867644207104
Okay, agreed, long history of racism, real thing, bad thing!

So.... what is to be done? Fire all white police officers https://twitter.com/CircleReader/status/1265480532491632641
No, the CCP did not deploy the argument, "We are happy to meet any clearly-stated demands of protestors which are within our power to deliver." They deployed the argument "The protestors are terrorists and deserve to die." https://twitter.com/geofftock/status/1265480786817413120
