The first illustrated edition of one of Jane Austen's novels was a French translation of 'Persuasion' c. 1828. Here is one of the illustrations (appears to be Captain Wentworth removing one of the Musgrove boys from Anne's back):

Learning about Austen in translation, especially in French translation has been fascinating. This translation of Persuasion ('La Famille Elliot') was first published in 1821 and was composed by novelist Isabelle de Montolieu and publisher Arhus Berthand.

Editions of Austen's novels were actually translated into French and published in France during her lifetime (mainly by Isabelle de Montolieu). She almost certainly did not know about it. When Isabelle de Montolieu translated Sense and Sensibility, she took many liberties...

....with it and changed the ending: Willoughby's first wife dies so he proposes to Marianne, who rejects him. She proposes to Colonel Brandon (by throwing herself at his feet) instead. Willoughby instead marries Eliza....the girl he seduced and ruined in the first place.
