Read a lot about #ONLTC today. When I moved to Australia, I worked as a #PSW for several months until my nursing license was approved. It was, without a doubt, the hardest job I’ve ever had 1/n
I will never forget my first day on the job... I was asked to wash 10 nursing home residents, by myself, all with limited mobility. I had not received any training. By the end of the second wash, I was completely soaked and had to beg for a change of clothes 2/n
At one home, the workload was so intense that I asked the manager for some help, because I knew I wouldn’t be able to change and wash everyone on my list. She told me just to leave half the residents and move on, and that someone would do it later that evening (12 hrs away!) 3/n
I was shocked and stayed past my shift to finish. The manager contacted my agency and requested I never return. 4/n
Ontario’s LTCs are yet another example of profits being prioritized over care. Furthermore, PSWs are mostly women and many are women of colour. Their jobs are routinely threatened if they dare to speak up against these conditions 5/n
It is shocking that it took a military report to finally get our provincial government to notice. We need to demand that our leaders protect LTC residents and workers from profit-mongering at the expense of their safety and dignity #ONLTC /fin
