Today's #APAHM is the full cast of one of my favorite shows, @KimsConvenience! Kim's Convenience is a Canadian television sitcom that depicts the Korean Canadian Kim family who run a convenience store in the Moss Park neighborhood of Toronto:
"Appa" and "Umma"--Korean for "dad" and "mom"--and their daughter Janet and estranged son Jung; I'm also going to include Jung's friend/roommate/coworker, Kimchee. The series is based on Ins Choi's 2011 play of the same name.
This show is loved by many--especially Canadian audiences--but has a large cult following since its arrival on #Netflix. It is a major hit among Asian American, Canadian, and Australian communities.
So we are going to have some snippets of the folks who portray the main characters: Sang-il, Yong-mi, Janet, Jung, and Kimchee.
@bitterasiandude Paul Sun-Hyung Lee is a Korean Canadian actor. When Lee was a baby, his parents immigrated from South Korea to Canada, living in London, Toronto and Calgary. In 1990, he moved back to Toronto to attend the University of Toronto.
Those born in the 90s may recall him from #HarrietTheSpy and #IcePrincess. What people may not know is he's a really big #StarWars nerd. Definitely check him out on Instagram or Twitter!
@jean_yoon Jean Yoon (Umma/Yong-mi) is an American born, Korean-Canadian actress, writer, playwright and poet. Yoon was born in Champaign, Illinois to parents of Korean descent in 1962 and raised in Toronto.
She started her career as an actress in the early 1980s, but quit and went on to complete her degree at the University of Toronto. A decade later, in 1995, she returned to acting and started her own group called Loud Mouth Asian Babes,
through which she has written and produced plays that focus on the Korean diaspora, mostly in Canada. For her role on Kim's Convenience, Yoon won an ACTRA Award and received a Canadian Screen Award nomination in 2017.
#andreabang Andrea Bang (Janet) is a Canadian actress from Burnaby, British Columbia. Bang was born in Burnaby to Korean immigrant parents. Andrea received a degree in Psychology from University of British Columbia while also taking acting lessons.
@andrewphung Andrew Phung (Kimchee) is a Canadian actor, improviser, and comedian. Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Phung is a graduate of the University of Calgary and an alumnus of the Loose Moose Theatre Company.
Phung's father is of Vietnamese descent and his mother is Chinese. He joined the Loose Moose Theatre Company when he was 16 years old and is currently a senior ensemble performer and instructor with. Phung is the co-founder of #YYCSolediers,
an online sneaker group which also produces Sneaker SWAP, a Calgary-based sneaker event. He is heavily involved in an organization called Youth Central, a non profit organization which helps youth get involved in their communities.
@simuliu Simu Liu (Jung) is a Canadian-Chinese actor, writer, and stuntman. He was born in Harbin and immigrated to Canada at the age of five. He was raised in Mississauga, Ontario.
Simu studied two years at University of Western Ontario and two years studying finance and accounting at the Ivey Business School. He worked as an accountant at Deloitte but was eventually laid off.
He decided to explore other career options before deciding to pursue a career as an actor. He first got his start as an actor as an extra on #PacificRim.
At #SDCC 2019, it was announced that he had been cast as the #Marvel Comics superhero #ShangChi in the upcoming film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, set in the #MCU. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be Marvel's first Asian-led film.
I also adore Simu, because of his comedy outside of his work, a willingness to speak to fans through social media ( #subtleAsiantraits), and his intrinsic responsibility to bring awareness to issues in the Asian communities.
I am SUPER proud of everyone in the full cast of Kim's Convenience, and I tried to only limit it to one person, and I just couldn't. This show brings me to tears in so many of their arcs--conversations between Asian cultures (because again, we are NOT ALL THE SAME),
engaging with other minority groups, exposing familial and community relationships through generational gaps, and those really hard conversations that happen in any family. PLEASE give this show a try and support all of these wonderful actors. #OKSeeYou
