Let’s ban conversion therapy. Let’s also put in place the necessary resources to actually end it.
Ie, it’s great to have it banned. But realistically, much of these practices will continue regardless of legality. So how do we stop them? Well-funded and strategic interventions.
1) targeted education for healthcare providers, faith leaders etc on 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion.
2) broader education on 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion for everyone.
3) reporting bodies, so folks who’ve survived conversion therapy or who believe it may be taking place somewhere, can report such practices to the appropriate bodies - and do so anonymously.
4) investments in community-based 2SLGBTQ+ organizations, including targeted supports for parents and youth.
There’s probably a lot more that we need to do to genuinely end conversion therapy. And a ban is certainly a start. But throughout this discussing, I’ve seen literally nothing on the actual mechanisms we need in place to end this traumatic practice for good.
