It’s both shocking and sad that 878 of the 1606 people who have died to date, were in nursing homes. The question is, of the remaining 728 souls, how many actually died from Covid and what percentage died from other illnesses and had just tested positive or had suspected Covid19
All these lives were valuable and have left friends and family grieving but it’s important that we establish how figures have been used to justify restrictions including postponing tens of thousands of cancer screening tests, so we can quantify the secondary deaths from Covid19
Not only will the restrictions cause deaths by lack of early diagnosis of all health problems but deaths from, isolation, despair, poverty, increased alcohol and food consumption and many other factors will decrease long term mortality for many people.
There needs to a be full independent investigation to find out why nursing homes were hit so hard by this virus & why we didn’t focus on them from day one. It seems we focused on the whole population most of whom were never really at risk and abandoned the elderly and vulnerable.
We were one of the last countries in Europe to experience Covid 19, so the words unprecedented and uncharted don’t work as we knew from the experience of other countries that nursing homes and elderly were at risk but we waited until it was too late to focus on them.
The state reopened nursing homes to visitors after some homes had the good sense to stop visiting to avoid spread. We canceled testing and tracing for at risk elderly in the early days but tested young healthy people with mild symptoms.
The government are now suggesting they saved tens of thousands of lives using the same incorrect data they used when they predicted tens of thousands would die 9 weeks ago. In fact other countries with less or no restrictions have had the same reduction infections and deaths.
How long will the back slapping last when tens of thousands of lives are destroyed by unemployment, despair, poverty and destitution. When cancer victims are told next year, ‘we’re sorry your cancer or heart disease is past the point of treatment’ because of no early diagnosis
Will we now protect the elderly, the people at risk, open cancer screening and our GPs and hospitals, so we can look after ourselves. Are we going to continue to destroy the country by keeping businesses closed while evidence shows there is little or no risk in the community.
