Hey, serious question here. Before I get into it- I just want to say that I come from a place of privilege because of my skin color. So, I understand that what I may think is alright, might not be for those who don’t have the same advantages I do. That is why I am making this.(1)
TW: this thread has (very brief and non-descriptive) mentions of police brutality. (2)
For a little while now, I’ve been interested in becoming a detective. (Specifically, a detective for sex related crimes.) I understand that first I will have to be a cop for a little bit before I can become a detective. This is where the questions come up for me.(3)
I understand that today’s justice system is racist, and that there have been many instances of police brutality. And, in many cases, said police officers usually only get a slap on the wrist. It is because of this that I am unsure if I really want to be a detective.(4)
I don’t want to be in any position where I would be apart of the problem. I know that it’s not just enough to not be racist myself, but I need to actively oppose it too, and use my privilege for good. So- I am asking, would it be okay if I become a cop as long as I:(5)
1- actively make sure that other cops aren’t using their privilege wrongly, and say something when things get out of hand 2- use the privilege I would have from being a cop for good(6)
Another thing I have a question about is: I know that cops shouldn’t be at pride, although since I’m bi- going to pride is something I’ve always wanted to do. Would it be okay to go if I’m a cop, as-long as I am off the clock?(7)
I also want to say that if this thread gives of any ‘white savior’ vibes or anything of the sort, that is not at all my attention. I’m not trying to be like “oh look at me, teehee, aren’t I just awesome?” I’m genuinely concerned about what I should do.(8)
Again, I would hate to ever contribute to police brutality. (Whether I know I am or not.) This is why I thought it would be better to ask those who know more than I do. That is why I am making this- not to get ‘woke brownie points’ or anything like that.(9)
I understand that I am not as knowledgeable on these topics, because I haven’t ever experienced any of it firsthand. I know that there’s a difference between reading about something, and living it. Which is why I wanted other people’s opinions.(10)
So, if in anyway becoming a cop would make me apart of the problem, I won’t, and I’ll find another job where I can help people. Thank you for reading(11)
