Now feels like a good time to talk about diversifying skillsets as a musician. You know why? Because almost every primary income source I have (private percussion students) evaporated when shit hit the fan. (1/5)
You know what didn't disappear? Audio tech jobs. Mixing gigs, music technology lessons, and now even mixing livestreams are making up a large part of my monthly income. (2/5)
I cannot tell you HOW MANY teachers, colleagues, and mentors I had in college (and still have frankly) telling me I'm mismanaging my time and need to focus on my instrument. Because apparently the only way to succeed as a musician is to "git gud". (3/5)
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you shouldn't practice. I'm still a drummer, drumming is the way I prefer spend my time. But putting your entire identity into an instrument is SO not good for you. And when shit hits the fan, we all need to have SOMETHING else we can do. (4/5)
So go cook, go make beats, fucking make jewelry for your Etsy for all I care. Just don't put all your eggs in one basket and wonder why all your eggs get broken (5/5)
