Okay, I have to admit. I did not see a full on revival of Fraggle Rock coming. I figured the “Rock On” would be as good as it gets for the well remembered but mostly dormant Jim Henson creation. https://www.vulture.com/2020/05/fraggle-rock-reboot-apple-tv.html
Make no mistake, I’m cautious but watching “Rock On” assures me that the guys at the Jim Henson Company gets Fraggle Rock. Not just the characters but the theme of how the world is connected, that was the point Jim wanted to make with the original series.
It’s the story that commonly get passed around that Henson came up with Fraggle Rock because he wanted to bring world peace.
Besides the original series that aired on HBO for 4 seasons, Fraggle Rock had a cartoon that aired in 1987. It was alright, was basically a watered down version of the Muppet version. Only lasted only 13 episodes, NBC probably saw how big Muppet Babies was & wanted their own.
Fraggle Rock also had a CGI spin-off centering on the Rock’s other, workaholic inhabitants, the Doozers. I didn’t watch that but it lasted for 2 seasons with 72 episodes on Hulu.
In the Nu10s, Fraggle Rock had an on & off again comics run from Archaia Press. The most recent volume was released in 2018. Ironically, a company that had experience with Muppet comics, Boom Studios, acquired Archaia in 2013.
A Fraggle Rock movie has been “in development” for 15 years, with an ever changing scripts, producers, & even studios attached to the project. Last known update was 5 years ago when Joseph Gordon-Levitt came on board as both an actor & producer.
Fraggle Rock characters have (not accounting for puppets being repurposed as other characters) appeared in The Muppets Take Manhattan, A Muppet Family Christmas, & The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson.
In 2012, the main five Fraggles & Uncle Traveling Matt appeared in the music video for Ben Folds Five’s “Do It Anyway”. With Karen Prell (Red) & Dave Goelz (Boober & Traveling Matt) reprising their roles.
In honor of Fraggle Rock’s 30th anniversary, the Hub aired a marathon with bumpers featuring Red (Prell) & Gobo (John Tartaglia, taking over the role). Yes, they mentioned a certain Hub show. Yes, this image right here did happen. And I kinda hate it.
And in April 2020, we got “Fraggle Rock: Rock On”. A short-form series for Apple TV+ produced during the pandemic where the Fraggles (and gratuitous celebrity cameos) chat from their respective homes with “DoozerTubes”. The series did well enough for Apple to order a revival.
And that’s pretty much the history of Fraggle Rock. Let me conclude this thread with this statement: Mokey is Best Fraggle, don’t @ me!
