If you’re going to organize a protest against police violence in 2020 then abolition has to be your ultimate demand. If you want to work on harm reduction leading up to that then ensure you have policies that you want passed. As in the case with George Floyd, eliminating use of
force that can harm or kill like a knee-choke. Reducing the police force & militarized weapons & investing that back in the community. Passing legislation like #CPAC which gives community democratic control over the police department. Craft a victim led consent decree. What you
don’t do is invite a celebrity out to speak that doesn’t have any theoretical or political grounding in Black liberation and abolition. You don’t take up space yourself and give empty platitudes to the press. You don’t take up space & leave families impacted by police violence
out of the conversation. If you’re organizing a protest they should always be centered & given space to speak. What I witnessed today was highly disappointing & shameful. Chicago has produced so many great organizers, activist & organizations but we also have self centered people
who love the camera & not the work. That gain celebrity & cut ties with the movement. Now more than ever we have to shun this kind of thinking. Systemic violence is at our door & making empty weak reformist demands can potentially harm real movements for revolutionary change.
