A thread about acknowledgements practices. When I last published in MNRAS or A&A, it was the journal policy not to allow acknowledgements of country. I was very disappointed by this. https://twitter.com/fringetracker/status/1265377459781996547
MNRAS policy was: https://twitter.com/fringetracker/status/1265389270493208576
Meanwhile A&A: https://twitter.com/fringetracker/status/1265390188999704581
We have had no issues with AAS or Nature group journals with including our preferred acknowledgements. There has been a limited takeup of Gadigal ( https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/search/q=%20full%3A%22gadigal%22&sort=date%20desc%2C%20bibcode%20desc&p_=0) and Lenape ( https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/search/p_=0&q=%20full%3A%22lenape%22&sort=date%20desc%2C%20bibcode%20desc) acknowledgements in ADS references so far.
And there are some good resources for finding out whose land you're on, if you don't already know, and how to acknowledge this: eg https://twitter.com/fringetracker/status/1049380436353404933
I am not an expert on any of this, but especially in light of the astronomical mega-projects being undertaken on occupied Indigenous lands, it's important to engage with this issue and back up symbolic statements by contributing to real change.
The preferred form of such acknowledgements can change over time, or be contested. This can be a complex space and you just have to listen to what's being asked for. The more important thing is to include Indigenous peoples meaningfully in making the future of astronomy.
