Am taking a webinar (recorded) about advocating for libraries by @pcsweeney . First big takeaway: use of the library isn't correlated with support for the library. This means libraries need to nurture a relationship with their "super supporters" to get political influence.
So who are these supporters? That's a hard one to figure out. @EveryLibrary building a database that they'll give out free. It's not complete b/c we don't really know who people support libraries, or why. Need to get better at this!
Most of our communication is one-directional (posters, Fb posts, etc.). We should be putting an action step into all of it - like us on social media, make a donation, etc. Easy things to do: put the Fb/T/Insta addy on the poster, collect names for a listserv, ask for donations.
This communication also tends to be what WE want them to know. Need to be thinking about how our values/offerings line up with their values/needs, and talk about THAT. Example: how the library is part of the socioeconomic health of the community. #LibraryMarketing
