Okay I got bored and started thinking since Masters are back, what is Pauper Masters?
So I'm making a thread.
Okay, so Pauper's deal is it is supposed to be cheaper, right?
So what if the goal of Pauper Masters is to make it cheaper?
First step, find needed reprints.
Starting with archetypes and looking at the most expensive archetypes. Anything over $50 is fair game I say. A pauper deck should be less than a commander precon.
WotC, don't price gouge the precons.
Next step - yes, we know, Oubliette. Moving on.
Okay, so hypothetical sets.
First archetype - Elves. Let's see what's expensive.
I looked at five Elves decks that all Top 32d or better. Four were UG, one was Four Color (not-Black).
The outlier, being over a buck and in only the four color deck, was Relic of Progenitus.
Next up, actual dang Elves.
Found four in desepreate need of getting cheaper. Every elf deck was running at least two of these three, out of the most expensive decks. All multiples. Everyone ran Fyndhorn Elves.
Next, non-critters. Every deck ran at least one of these four cards.
All the UG Elves decks also ran Snow-Islands, but I don't know if forcing Snow again is a good idea, so I am holding back on Snow.
Also, sorry, two decks were four color, and they were both non-White. My apologies.
Next up, five Tron decks, all of which are at least Jeskai. Two are non-Black. Two are WUBRG.
First up, that Relic of Progenitus is also in this archetype!
That makes it seem more necessary.
Now, the three that all Tron decks need, and they're all $4 or higher - The Tron Lands. Yep.
(BTW, Force of Will just got three Stones that are, in all essence, Urza-Tron, and I'm waiting for them to have tons of GitS-Tron decks now)
Two that surprised me on the price - Expedition Map and Red Elemental Blast, which I guess didn't just get a reprint. So REB is 6x the price of Blue.
I forgot pictures. Woops.
Last non-creature for this Tron archetype is Chromatic Star. It only showed up in two decks, but it's 2 mana, get one mana of any color and draw a card. That's a value engine.
Okay, two critters for Jeskai+ Tron. Mulldrifter, who we all know is probably just an extra Divination, and Gorilla Shaman, who is just straight anti-artifact value on a 1/1.
So, Ephemerate decks are new, not going to deny that, but they are also... fun?
So obviously, they all need Ephemerate, which is not super expensive, but it's fun.
But there were some surprises here because it's so new.
First, two cards that didn't surprise me - Counterspell and Preordain. This made sense. But one list was "Azorius with Lightning Bolt Why Not?" and I liked it? Big surprise to see Bolt.
Yes, I know there's a All Bolts Secret Lair. This product is to be CHEAP.
Next, three critters both decks ran - Mulldrifter again, Standard Bearer and Spellstutter Sprite. Those all seem like fun.
Then, big surprise - one ran Ancient Den. That made me think - Pauper, you can run Artifact Lands. Why not include them as "Exciting" cards?
And more of course.
Izzet Spells and Delver had a lot of Overlap, so there's these - Ponder, Deprive, Delver (natch), Counterspell and Bolt. Then we get the weird cards...
Snap, Skred, Mutagenic Growth and Pyroblast. (Also, stop calling decks Izzet when they're green. C'mon.)
With Pyroblast, I feel you'd need to reprint Hydroblast too.
Okay, going to leave for a bit, but before I do, three cards I didn't see in decks but are just oh my god expensive -
Three Visits, Rhystic Study and Hunting Cheetah.
Visits is $78! What the heck!?
Okay I'm back!
Next deck archetype - Cycling.
Cycling did just get a huge shot in the arm by Ikoria, so I'll be ignoring Ikora cards over $1, because it's too new a set to have a stable pricing yet.
And we're off!
So in cycling, our old friends Red Elemental Blast and Chromatic Star are back.
Also, a lot of these Cycling decks are also Storm, and somehow only one has a reasonable amount of blue?
Weird.
So the storm decks, clearly, need storm engines.
Manamorphose, Rite of Flame and Cabal Ritual do a fine job of that. (I personally prefer Dark Ritual, but this is for Cycling)
Oh and Lotus Petal? I thought that was an Uncommon, but I was wrong?
Now we have some needed Cycling reprints - Streetwraith and Edge of Autumn. Both need to be remade, and a Pauper Masters is the place to be.
Next archetype to plunder for "expensive" cards is Mystical Teachings (this thread's gonna be LONG, folks)
One, we gotta ignore Arcum's Astrolabe. It's banned, but some of these lists are a little older than the ban. So that's out.
Also, AA is only $0.50, so...
Okay, COunterspell is here, as is Vault of Whispers, Preordain, Spellstutter Sprite, Mulldrifter, Ex. Map, the Tron lands in one deck. Those we already knew. These were all UB except on UBRG.
Time for the new additions.
