One of the best differences about living in Austin vs. NYC:

People here rarely Venmo.

If I host a dinner, I'm not gonna charge the guests. They'll bring something or invite me to something later.

Round of drinks at a bar? Everyone will get you back eventually.
There are exceptions, like fancier big group dinners, but at least 90% of the time no one bothers meticulously splitting out the bill.

In NYC it feels like every bar or restaurant trip is more transactional. It almost feels dirty visiting from this informal IOU culture.
I suspect this is less about Austin though and more about the low CoL and NYC being so money-focused. Wouldn't be surprised to hear the same thing from my friends in Nashville, Boise, Boulder, etc.
