The NHL announced Tuesday it will abandon the rest of the regular season and go straight into the playoffs with 24 teams instead of 16 if it is able to resume play.

NHL expects to resume season with 24-team playoff; training camps in early July with season completion in fall. All games to be played in 2 hub cities; Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver among Canadian candidates. League stresses comprehensive COVID-19 testing will be in place. (1/2)

Top 4 teams in each conference to get first-round bye while other teams play elimination round. Length of early rounds yet to be decided, but final 2 rounds will be best of 7. For purposes of record keeping, regular season is declared over. (2/2)
