5 wild things birds do, a thread:

1) Male flame bowerbirds dilate their pupils to demonstrate their quality and sexiness.
2) Hatching rates among boobies like masked or Nazca boobies are not so good. So to ensure success the female lays two eggs. If both hatch, the parents quickly facilitate a fight to the death wrestling match between siblings, where the loser is ejected from the nest.*
*In some species like blue-footed boobies, this behavior is facultative meaning it only happens if food supplies are extremely low and the parents cannot support two chicks. 📸 was by Forest and Kim Starr
3) Acorn woodpeckers drill custom holes in “granary trees” and can store up to 50,000 acorns. To supply and defend such a precious resource, they live in stable social groups and will pass on granary trees through generations. 📸 Edouard Rozey
4) Black herons trick fish to their death by using their wings to create the appearance of a sheltered hideout. This is called canopy feeding.
5) Nicobar pigeons look like this and are probably the closest living relative to dodos. 📸Jon Baxter
