You know who isn't surprised that a liberal can turn out to be racist? Liberals. Unlike the far left and right, we know that our group is imperfect and contains jerks and fools. That's our advantage. The far left and right prefer to lie about their own purity.
When liberals turn out to be racist, liberals generally say, "Damn it, racist liberal, stop being a racist." What we don't do is say, "They weren't *really* a liberal." Racism is everywhere in America. Only way to get rid of it is to first understand that it's everywhere.
And you can absolutely be a liberal, vote Democratic, endorse black candidates, and want to vote for Obama a third time, and still be a racist. In fact, you probably are. Knowing that and fighting against it is the first step.
(That's why Jordan Peele put that line in "Get Out." It's also why the female antagonist was able to turn on the tears and feign fear despite presenting herself as "woke" throughout. White people can always fall back on racism. Always.)
(And since I know some far lefty is going through their Dropbox, yes, I admitted to using the N word twenty-five years ago. Because I internalized racism through years of being white in America. If you're white, you did too. And unless you're always vigilant, it will surface.)
(I have endeavored to be ever-vigilant, knowing that there's a part of my unconscious that I despise, and that I'd take out with a melon-baller if I could. And over time its influence has waned. But I'm always aware it's there and that it's my moral duty to fight it until I die.)
