1. With others, I own multiple small businesses and lead a group of franchisees who each own at least one small business. Our coffee shops were closed for four weeks. Click and collect for two weeks. Reduced seating since then. Landlord relief ranges from 0% - 100%.
2. The wage subsidy enabled all our staff to have some certainty in the middle of a completely unique time in our trading history. If the subsidy had come without the conditions about who it was for, our legal obligations to our landlords would have outweighed those to staff.
3. Not our moral obligation or our absolute view that our staff are the most important assets we have. But legally we could have not paid staff, and instead paid landlords. The specificity of the subsidy means landlords can't point to that cash injection and make demands on it.
4. WHICH IS A HUGE BENEFIT TO SMALL BUSINESS. And to NZ society. Who is best able to bear the brunt of no income for four weeks? Who has the most power? Who can better negotiate with banks? Who keeps their assets? It's tough for some landlords - but let's feed more people first.
