Thread:

We all know what happened with Law Sikho and that infamous webinar...

Today I came across a poster for an event organized by what appears to be a small legal education related business. Their debate topic is extremely problematic.
I tweeted about the debate, but cropped out the organizer's name and identity.

I didn't know if they themselves had problematic views or if this debate was just one bad idea that got taken up for execution.
While my gut asked me to call them out publicly, I took a second and reconsidered. I decided to write to them about it - to express my concern and request them to cancel or change the topic.

I felt they should be given an opportunity to rectify/clarify.
In Law Sikho's case, the event had already happened - problematic topic, problematic guest and very very problematic behavior on air and there was a subsequent non apology.

But here, the event still has hasn't happened, there was time for possible rectifications.
I have written them an email to inform why their topic is problematic and have urged them to do the necessary.

These are small businesses which will one way or another make mistakes - everyone does. Here, I felt that I had an opportunity to help someone avoid a pitfall.
I felt that I could help a small business or start up avoid a mistake. I didn't want to call out someone without hearing their side - especially for an event that still hasn't happened.

You never know - it may be a mistake that they may accept and willingly rectify.
I love small businesses - I come from a small-business family. I know how hard it is to build something from scratch - I have seen my father and brother work very hard, I have worked with them.
If I can help one person avoid a potential mistake, I feel it is as good as rectifying 100 mistakes that have already been committed.
A small mistake or controversy or PR disaster can pretty much end a start up and put them out of business - which is why I feel they should be very careful. But, if they are about to mess up by chance, we ought to try and help them if we can - good karma goes a long way imo.
I do not believe in the 'gotcha red handed' sorta activism where people constantly find things to call out instead of trying to help people avoid mistakes. (No - this is not a subtweet or anything of that sort - please don't take it personally. Don't twist it out of context)
I will update this thread if they reply and make rectifications or if they refuse to budge - whatever the case may be.
