Jia’s latest addendum moves her firmly from naive to complicit in my mind

Drop “Bush-era security apparatus” & use the conflict of the state vs immigrants to obscure class conflict & abuse

Then link to a thread focused almost exclusively on the technical definition of smuggling

Is there something proving the abuse/usury was found to be untrue? If it exists, why not link to it instead of a random thread by an injury & malpractice lawyer? A lawyer who btw flipped a couple of days later & admitted that he can’t know what’s true and what’s not.

There’s a whole community of Filipinos doing immigration & labor advocacy. They’re talking, about this case but also about what ppl are facing right now from similar businesses, but you wouldn’t know that from Jia’s coverage.

All anyone has asked Jia to recognize is

1. her parents were part of an industry known to harm immigrants for profit

2. we can’t take her post at face value b/c it left out the testimony of the ppl most affected

3. there are so many unknowns & she’s not an appropriate arbiter

Jia saying she wants to report on her parents’ business & interview the nurses/teachers makes my skin crawl.

It’s not just that she’s being like “hey editors hit me up!!” but also that we know she has firmly picked a side. Could she truly report fairly or interview with grace?

also, unless jia's about to bust a govt conspiracy wide open, who even wants reporting on this? it's like not news...

the least charitable part of me says she's angling for a book deal/high-profile essay. ppl weren't even talking about this case WIDELY until she brought it up.
