it's not necessarily the job of the novelist or the filmmaker to understand power structures and justice, though it can be useful, but if you're commenting on the manifestations of those structures in the world and don't understand them, I very much want you to go away

conversely having an especially fine sense of the what is just and right doesn't do anything for your draftsmanship or plot structure
