1. Delighted to confirm that @Edinburgh_CC has been awarded £5m funding from Spaces for People @scotgov fund to help reallocate road space for active travel facilities & safer physical distancing. This pm @MathesonMichael announced a welcome trebling of the national fund to £30m
2. This amazing funding award recognises the quality and depth of our ambitious bid and will enable us to deliver city wide measures for wider pavements, segregated cycle lanes and close some roads to vehicle traffic while opening them up for pedestrians and cyclists.
3. We can say today that work on Warriston Rd & Stanley St will start in the next few days for a fast finish, followed by quick further substantial action on hospital access routes on Old Dalkeith Road & Crewe Rd South. These will benefit key workers in these & other workplaces
4. Many more announcements to follow soon as we pull together the enormous and very welcome no of suggestions from the public, community councils, stakeholder groups & councillors. A detailed briefing has been circulated to councillors earlier this evening.
5. All of this action points us towards a better ‘new normal’, reflecting the path we’re moving along towards a greener, more sustainable Edinburgh, as we emerge from this difficult time. Very important to place transport choices at the very heart of economic & societal recovery
6. Many of the pressures around public transport and other transport choices were highlighted effectively by @MathesonMichael in Holyrood this afternoon as he delivered the Transport Transition guidelines. In Edinburgh we need to respond strongly to those challenges
7. Incredibly proud of the careful, detailed work that the @Edinburgh_CC team, in partnership with @SustransScot are doing to help realise the ambitions of everyone who has contributed thoughts ideas as part of this shared process.
8. I have heard a lot of concern about a perceived lack of speed in getting stuff onto the ground but the work we have been undertaking will help to ensure well thought out quality schemesare delivered. Lots more to come very shortly, designed to support this city & its residents
