Amy Cooper isn’t sorry that she endangered Christian Cooper’s life over the wknd. She isn’t sorry about feigning hysteria + fear to amplify her authority and privilege. She is sorry that her brazen display brought her notoriety, infamy and inconvenience.
She wasn’t afraid. She didn’t fear for her life as she may later suggest. Christian Cooper was birdwatching. He defies the black boogeyman trope. His audacity, in the form of a polite ask that she leash her dog & comply w/the rules, provoked rage.
She was entitled, indignant, combative and willfully deceitful. And she understood full well the likely consequences. She wanted to teach him a lesson about his place. And it backfired. Spectacularly.
And for that she is sorry. She is sorry her victim performance backfired. Bc that’s not how America is supposed to work for her. She is sorry that her name is trending and her job in jeopardy. She is sorry about losing the dog.
She is sorry that there are legal consequences to her behavior. But is she sorry about the real harm done to Christian Cooper and potentially fatal consequences? Her apology rings hollow & insincere.
In the end, the spotlight will be on her - centering her grievance and resentment. Her need to be absolved of any negative label and to see herself in the best ligt will be privileged, per usual, over the life & dignity of a black man.
