One interesting thing about this Cummings stuff I think, is that the reaction to it shows signs of the political realignment thatâs been going on for a little while, where much of Middle England is slowly but surely moving away from the Tories
The Tories would have you believe that the outrage is just coming from the typical âmetropolitan leftâ etc, but I donât think thatâs true.
Iâve seen ppl on local FB groups, and ppl I work with (bankers, so hardly typical socialists), that are all pissed off about this too

These people:
- Work in a white-collar job, or are retired
- Have traditional views on family and political institutions (so may be wary of BJ and Cummings
)
- Value security and stability
- Are liberal minded on many social issues but care more about the economy, crime etc

They voted Tory last time through a combination of habit and a fear of Corbyn, not with much devotion. Scandals like this will only make them more uneasy.
Next time around middle England may be persuaded to look elsewhere, if there is a compelling alternative?

If the Lib Dems ever want to be vaguely relevant again then itâs these guys, in Winchester, Cheadle, Lewes etc, that need to be targeted. They could be the âWorkington Manâ of 2024
Winning them over wonât be easy and will require careful thought.
However it seems to me that moving further to the left economically, constructing âprogressive alliancesâ and focusing on relatively small issues like gender politics, are all things that probably wonât help.

Last time we won in St Albanâs and Richmond, and we have close second places all over the home counties, so this realignment may well benefit us in the long run.
The âBlue Wallâ of Southern England is looking unstable, could the Lib Dems breach it? I think itâs possible

(Of course much of this is speculative and a lot more work needs to be done, but I think thereâs at least the beginnings of a strategy there haha)
