I watched that hideous Amy Cooper video. It was (sadly) precisely what I had imagined it would be. She also insists she's not a racist and I think she really believes that. Why? Because like most liberals and many MANY on the left, she uses the right "terminology."
I bet she would never use the n word. She would also never say "black man." She uses African American bc "she's not a racist." I meet a lot of ppl like this. They are so focussed on using the "right" language they never get to the hard work of thinking abt what they really think.
They think using the right language is a short cut to justice and equity. They fail because they don't accept that the language they use isn't propelling them forward. It's only masking the problem.
"There's an African American gentleman walking down my street and I think he might be breaking into houses." That's a good liberal. And they don't think they're racist.
Years ago there was a movie that came out called The Dictator. A very basic movie filled with racist stereotypes of Arabs/Muslims built around the cartoonish Arab dictator. It's worth asking where this character came from. How was he created. How has he endured. Who props him up.
I'm not talking about in the movie. I'm talking abt history. Anyway, a colleague was lifting a portion of the audio and was painstakingly editing out some anti-Semitic trash the dictator was spewing. My colleague was wrestling with it and just going over the edit again and again.
I asked him why he was trying to edit that stuff out and he was dumbfounded. He said that how was he supposed to let anti-semitic language go on the air. (I agree of course). So I said the character is a racist stereotype saying racist things about others. Why edit?
He didn't get it. He couldn't see the larger problem bc he was focused on the smaller problem of the language. He thought he could fix the racism problem by excising the obviously racist words. But what about the rest?
That brings us back to Cooper and her complaint. She won't see it as racist bc she did her good liberal job by worrying about the language. She could have got that man killed. But at least she didn't call him the n word.
Some of the politest liberal people I've met have said some of the most racist shit I've ever heard.
