COLLEGE

— College does not teach you everything.

You must develop initiative in your learning and growing your skills. Examine the knowledge areas you want to focus on that you did not learn in school. Complete projects, start a blog and never be afraid of being a beginner.
CAREER

— Ask questions and be open to feedback.

There is never a stupid question. Only stupid people. In other words, you don’t know, but will come to know it when you ask the question. Ask questions early and often or search Google for answers. Never spin your wheels.
FINANCE

— Don’t buy that fancy car or rent out that luxury apartment.

Save your money. Sometimes we make mistakes and go out of our financial means for something we may want, but learn from your experience and strategize a new way for financial freedom.
COLLEGE

— Leverage career services

If you need help with your resume, LinkedIn or finding a job, go to these people who you are paying with your tuition money. Always update your experiences and never wait for an opportunity to come. Always be prepared before graduating.
CAREER

— Block or mute toxic energy.

Remove any and all people who exhibit toxicity. You owe no explanation. Your environment becomes your way of living. Never feel compelled to remain at a toxic job if it is causing harm to your mental health. You will thank yourself later.
FINANCE

— Live with your parents or roommate(s) for a year after graduation.

You save money compared to living on your own. Use this time to financially plan your next move (new apartment, job, car, etc.) that will be feasible for your income. Start a plan and work your plan.
CAREER

— Learn salary negotiation

Never sell yourself short or take the first offer. You want as much money as possible. Check out benefit options such as stocks, paid leave and vacation, etc. Give a range on what salary you want and why your background meet their investment.
COLLEGE

— Skip out on living in college dorms.

If you want the college experience, live in the dorms for the first year, but move off campus with a roommate or commute from home. You save yourself money in paying for high price dorms and food.
CAREER

— Document your accomplishments

If you are seeking a promotion or increase in salary, always keep record of your work accomplishments to show to your manager during performance review. You want to “manage” your manager. Promote yourself to receive the recognition.
FINANCE

— Invest in yourself not material possessions

Going back to school, signing up for an online course or attending a bootcamp are ALL solid investments because it is going into you. Your knowledge pays dividends, so it’s never a waste of time, money or energy.
CAREER

— Seek mentors and become one

You will grow faster when you have someone helping you throughout the process, so invest in people who are genuinely invested in your growth and remove those who are not. Social media blocking is always a method of choice, too.
COLLEGE

— Start building your network on and off campus

Understand that your network is your net worth. This is the future of work which is now. People tend to hire people they like and know, so start building genuine connections with others in your career field.
CAREER

— Develop your personal brand

What do you want to be known for? Think about that and get to building. Make yourself stand out by blogging, giving talks, podcasting, creating materials for others to learn, etc. Build your social capital, while you grow your wallet.
FINANCE

— Automate your spending habits

Download apps like Mint to track where you spend your money. If you don’t know where your money is going, then you will always overspend and get into financial debt. Use apps like Acorn to put extra funds into stocks. Every penny counts!
CAREER

— Cover your ass

Always keep your receipts or recordings of every important interaction with people, meetings or work related tasks. There will be times you will have to say “per our discussion” or “according to month, day and time”...
COLLEGE

— Intern and get involved

If you want to pivot your career before you even graduate, seek out opportunities to intern. Do not just apply to top companies, but startups who could use your knowledge and skills. Diversify your experience and get involved on campus!
FINANCE

— Start a side hustle

Examine what your good at and start making money from your talents. People who are interested will pay you for what your able to deliver. Do not sell yourself short because someone say your costs are too high. Know your worth and never settle.
CAREER

— Everyone will not like you

You will meet people who you do not take fond of and likewise, but try to keep it professional. If you have an occasion where you have to give a few French words, so be it. Learn from the experience and keep moving forward.

— Learn from your mistakes.

The only way to learn fast is to fail early, often and forward. Trying to be perfect will limit your growth and cause you to give up when you have what it takes to succeed. Pivot yourself to success by reflecting on your mistakes.
