"In addition to those payouts, LAPD officers are on track to receive 4.8% in pay raises in the fiscal year that starts July 1. The raises and bonuses are part of the city’s newest contract with the LA Police Protective League, the union that represents rank-and-file officers."
The growth in police officer salaries and benefits comes as @BLMLA @KtownforAll and other activist groups are pushing for reductions in law enforcement spending, arguing that the city spends too much on the LAPD and not enough on housing and social services.
“Many city employees are being asked to take a haircut right now, and a pretty significant one. And amidst this crisis, I don’t think L.A.'s police union should be so uniquely powerful that their officers aren’t facing the same situation,” - @SpikeFriedman
"Council members plan to review Garcetti’s budget over the next month."

By every indication that we've seen, City Council members do not plan to review the Mayor's budget or even touch it one bit.
One reason why @davidryu4u is afraid to step up to LAPD is because in February, Police Protective League spent nearly $45,000 on mailers promoting Ryu's re-election campaign.

I can almost certainly say that @nithyavraman wouldn't take one from police unions. #PeoplesBudgetLA
The end of the article basically outlines that City Council is prepared to do absolutely nothing and just let this budget pass as is.
One question I have is why @DavidZahniser or @dakotacdsmith didn't get any quotes from @DocMellyMel or any @BLMLA representatives?

Melina and Black Lives Matter are leading the #PeoplesBudgetLA movement and it's shame that LA Times wouldn't get a quote from them on this.
To be fair, they did receive quotes from Pete White at @LACANetwork, who is tightly connected with a lot of this movement.
