Last week I raised the horrific story of one resident being forgotten for 18 hours in an evacuation of The Rossyln Retirement home in #HamOnt. I asked the Premier why he doesn't take action when private for profit corporations are taking government funds yet failing our seniors.
Today the @TheSpec has reported that 4 other homes also operated by the Martino families have been given new orders to comply by the RHRA including Dundas Retirement Place in my riding. Which is alleged to be in contravention of regs related to infection prevention and control.
On the same day the RHRA issued its new orders, #HamOnt public health also issued orders to comply to the Dundas Retirement Place among other Martino homes.
It is abundantly clear so much more needs to be done to protect seniors living in congregate care facilities like retirement and long-term care homes as well as the frontline staff working in these homes. #onpoli
All workers need to have access to the personal protective equipment to keep themselves and residents safe and we need to end the conditions that lead to PSWs and other frontline workers in these homes being some of the lowest paid in the province.
We need a non-partisan, independent, public inquiry into the failures in our LTC system. The recently announced government commission will instead act as a back-room review and will not give those who have lost loved ones the voice they deserve. https://www.ontariondp.ca/news/unconscionable-horwath-ford-blocking-long-term-care-inquiry
If you or a loved one has concerns with a retirement home or LTC home please contact our office, Hamilton Public Health, and/or the RHRA:

It is unconscionable and immoral to profit off of the inadequate care of our seniors.
