💻 in preparation for the launch of our "Desktop Cinema Working Group", a loose thread of computer desktop art I've been collecting over the years...💻 Beginning with the poster for our event 5/28/20 🤓
the two video pieces I consulted repeatedly in developing my approach to screen capture: Camille Henrot's unforgettable, indispensable GROSSE FATIGUE (2013) and Chloé Galibert-Laîné and Kevin B. Lee's READING // BINGING // BENNING
There are so many examples of thinking about the ecologies of screen media in tandem with ecologies of human + nonhuman landscapes. The Inhabitants deep sea mining videos are a great example. Others include work by Louis Henderson and @AlexTyson23
There are many prehistories to current desktop cinema practices. Many of these treat the graphical user interface as a kind of space of enclosure that needs to be destroyed, like the completely euphoric pieces in Jodi's MY DESKTOP series...
But in addition to tracing the genealogy of "desktop cinema," it's fascinating to look at the computer desktop as a visual trope across all sorts of contemporary media, from news illustrations to [art]porn to the display strategies of artists & photographers.
will continue to update this thread with more examples and musings, but in the meantime, I'm super curious for your go-to references!
