Let’s talk about the seven books that I posted over the last week. They’re all written by women of color. Four are African-American, one is Latinx, one Japanese-American, and one Iranian. They didn’t show up on this list by accident.
The literary experience is broader than dead white men, and your reading experience should be too. Part of educating – ESPECIALLY in the field of English / Language Arts – is highlighting and emphasizing the importance of that diversity.
Listen, y’all - there are a TON of dead white men on my list of favorite authors. And that’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with consuming art written by white dudes; that just can’t be all you consume if you want to have any actual sense of being well read.
Broaden your horizons. Expand your awareness. Read books by and about people who are NOT YOU. I promise you’ll be better and smarter and more aware because of it.
