A lot of us watch the video and put ourselves in the position of the person behind the camera. It's important to feel this empathy and try to understand this racial trauma inflicted on Black men. It would be really constructive though to imagine ourselves as the white lady...1
And not pin her as a crazy unrelatable racist. I suspect that we all understand the underlying set of assumptions and racial script that she was using, the pretend fear, the seat of authority, the need to control...2
This sort of racism is just the water we swim in, which is to say that it is in all of us. So it might be good for some of us to shift our gaze of understanding here and try to pin down what justifications she used for her life-threatening actions...3
Maybe we can get closer to exposing these lies; making sure we and our friends never become her. Making sure we can spot the scripts and stories that people are constantly telling in polite company that lead to these despicable behaviors...End
