This is an informative article until the end where it recommends #universities sign up to a Race Equality Charter, an @AdvanceHE intiative (ie. The same ppl who run the shambles that is @Athena_SWAN).

What we need is SYSTEMIC change, NOT token change

What does that look like?
1. Extensive investigations as to the power structures implicitly and explicitly disadvantaging particular groups.
2. Consulting/working with these groups to identify how these issues might be addressed
3. Consulting with perpetrators to identify >>
>> their perspective (eg. They may not even know their own biases)
4. Dismantling problematic structures and rebuilding them with fairness as a core principle
5. Put support structures in place (eg. Childcare)
6. Have an anon feedback system
7. Regular review, evaluate, adjust
All this would depend on the findings of the first steps. Some initiative will have to be taken. Some trial and error will have to take place. Some time, money, and resources will be needed. Some people will not be happy (those people are likely part of the problem)
This is all a lot more effort than box ticking and signing an essentially meaningless charter.

Look at history, change through constitutional means doesnt work because the system is always rigged in favour of those at the top. We need radical change.
If our aim = pursuit of knowledge, then only having white middle class heterosexual able-bodied male knowledge is an undeniable loss of potential in our journey for truth. So the effort is worth it.
