I talked to @kaachiofficial, the U.K.'s first self-titled K-pop band. The band had a rocky start even before their official debut this April due to rumors, and multiple accusations of cultural appropriation. But Coco, a Korean member, doesn't think only Koreans can do #Kpop. https://twitter.com/APEntertainment/status/1265285087559651329
KAACHI members told me they have been getting very mean-spirited comments and even death threats. I did not really go into individual rumors on my story bc most don't merit the efforts, and I wanted to focus on the controversial part about KAACHI's debut - cultural appropriation.
KAACHI has angered many by calling themselves the "UK #Kpop" band. The members (non-Korean ones) were accused of hijacking Korean culture and K-pop. So to start out, I asked @hyunsuinseoul about the root of everything - What is K-pop? He said there's no set definition/consensus.
(Try not to get distracted by a weird time code on the video.... AP video is clients-only so I only have a screener & couldn't bring a full-vid story here, hence this thread).
